School Site
School grounds and school forests provide excellent educational opportunities if they are designed, managed and used correctly.
McDill grounds includes a large community garden and a 5-acre school forest which contains two outdoor classrooms. One classroom is equipped with picnic tables (donated by Lions Club) and a white board and podium designed and constructed by an Eagle Scout. The second outdoor classroom has stump seating for student use. This is a great place for reading as well as using our senses and developing observational skills.
Each fall, McDill participates in the Green Apple Day of Service event coordinated by the The Center for Green Schools at USGBC. This event engages students, families, and the community in improving school grounds including raking trails, planting butterfly gardens, and weeding gardens.
A small orchard with 4 fruiting trees has been planted on the north side of the building.
The playground includes a shelter for use in inclement weather.
Every student visits the Boston School Forest for a day trip each year.
In the summer of 2020, a challenge course was added to the north side of the building for additional opportunities for classes to utilize outdoor spaces for exercise and play.
